I have read most of his books about John Carter and enjoyed every one. The suspense, descriptions, flow and imagination are so great that it is hard to put it down. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from None -- Amazon needs to go back to the previous publisher - Font too small with the current publisher : This is NOT a comment on the story in the book, but the publisher. I had bought some of the other books, in the Barsoom series, from Amazon, and loved them! However, it appears that Amazon switched publishers. The book is 1"x1" smaller than the ones offered by the previous publisher. The font is incredible small. Also, the publisher chose a font that was very narrow making it even harder to read. (And no artwork in these versions either.) All this to save money in the printing. Too much eye strain to read books by this current publisher. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2020 )

Lots of action as expected, but grisly experiments, cloning etc add a touch of horror and "mad scientist" themes to the usual mix. Also touches on theory of evolution versus creationism and the role of scientists regarding genetic engineering- quite a controversial subject for when it was written in 1939-40.
